Classical Physics
The Department of Energy
Fundamentals Handbook entitled Classical Physics was prepared as an information
resource for personnel who are responsible for the operation of the
Department's nuclear facilities. A basic understanding of classical physics is
necessary for DOE nuclear facility operators, maintenance personnel, and the
technical staff to safely operate and maintain the facility and facility
support systems. The information in the handbook is presented to provide a
foundation for applying engineering concepts to the job. This knowledge will
help personnel more fully understand the impact that their actions may have on
the safe and reliable operation of facility components and
systems.

Electrical Science
The Electrical Science
Fundamentals Handbook was developed to assist nuclear facility operating
contractors provide operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff
with the necessary fundamentals training to ensure a basic understanding of
electrical theory, terminology, and application. The handbook includes
information on alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) theory,
circuits, motors, and generators; AC power and reactive components; batteries;
AC and DC voltage regulators; transformers; and electrical test instruments and
measuring devices. This information will provide personnel with a foundation
for understanding the basic operation of various types of DOE nuclear facility
electrical equipment.

Thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid
flow
The Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, and Fluid Flow
Fundamentals Handbook was developed to assist nuclear facility operating
contractors provide operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff
with the necessary fundamentals training to ensure a basic understanding of the
thermal sciences. The handbook includes information on thermodynamics and the
properties of fluids; the three modes of heat transfer - conduction,
convection, and radiation; and fluid flow, and the energy relationships in
fluid systems. This information will provide personnel with a foundation for
understanding the basic operation of various types of DOE nuclear facility
fluid systems.

Instrumentation and control
The
Instrumentation and Control Fundamentals Handbook was developed to assist
nuclear facility operating contractors provide operators, maintenance
personnel, and the technical staff with the necessary fundamentals training to
ensure a basic understanding of instrumentation and control systems. The
handbook includes information on temperature, pressure, flow, and level
detection systems; position indication systems; process control systems; and
radiation detection principles. This information will provide personnel with an
understanding of the basic operation of various types of DOE nuclear facility
instrumentation and control systems.

Mathematics
The Mathematics Fundamentals
Handbook was developed to assist nuclear facility operating contractors provide
operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff with the necessary
fundamentals training to ensure a basic understanding of mathematics and its
application to facility operation. The handbook includes a review of
introductory mathematics and the concepts and functional use of algebra,
geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. Word problems, equations, calculations,
and practical exercises that require the use of each of the mathematical
concepts are also presented. This information will provide personnel with a
foundation for understanding and performing basic mathematical calculations
that are associated with various DOE nuclear facility operations.

Chemistry
The Chemistry Handbook was developed
to assist nuclear facility operating contractors in providing operators,
maintenance personnel, and the technical staff with the necessary fundamentals
training to ensure a basic understanding of chemistry. The handbook includes
information on the atomic structure of matter; chemical bonding; chemical
equations; chemical interactions involved with corrosion processes; water
chemistry control, including the principles of water treatment; the hazards of
chemicals and gases, and basic gaseous diffusion processes. This information
will provide personnel with a foundation for understanding the chemical
properties of materials and the way these properties can impose limitations on
the operation of equipment and systems.

Engineering symbology, prints and drawings
The
Engineering Symbology, Prints, and Drawings Handbook was developed to assist
nuclear facility operating contractors in providing operators, maintenance
personnel, and technical staff with the necessary fundamentals training to
ensure a basic understanding of engineering prints, their use, and their
function. The handbook includes information on engineering fluid drawings and
prints; piping and instrument drawings; major symbols and conventions;
electronic diagrams and schematics; logic circuits and diagrams; and
fabrication, construction, and architectural drawings. This information will
provide personnel with a foundation for reading, interpreting, and using the
engineering prints and drawings that are associated with various DOE nuclear
facility operations and maintenance.

Material Science
The Material Science Handbook
was developed to assist nuclear facility operating contractors in providing
operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff with the necessary
fundamentals training to ensure a basic understanding of the structure and
properties of metals. The handbook includes information on the structure and
properties of metals, stress mechanisms in metals, failure modes, and the
characteristics of metals that are commonly used in DOE nuclear facilities.
This information will provide personnel with a foundation for understanding the
properties of facility materials and the way these properties can impose
limitations on the operation of equipment and systems.

Mechanical Science
The Mechanical Science
Handbook was developed to assist nuclear facility operating contractors in
providing operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff with the
necessary fundamentals training to ensure a basic understanding of mechanical
components and mechanical science. The handbook includes information on diesel
engines, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and miscellaneous mechanical
components. This information will provide personnel with a foundation for
understanding the construction and operation of mechanical components that are
associated with various DOE nuclear facility operations and
maintenance.

Nuclear Physics and Reactor theory
The Nuclear
Physics and Reactor Theory Handbook was developed to assist nuclear facility
operating contractors in providing operators, maintenance personnel, and the
technical staff with the necessary fundamentals training to ensure a basic
understanding of nuclear physics and reactor theory. The handbook includes
information on atomic and nuclear physics; neutron characteristics; reactor
theory and nuclear parameters; and the theory of reactor operation. This
information will provide personnel with a foundation for understanding the
scientific principles that are associated with various DOE nuclear facility
operations and maintenance.
